MABEL THERESA SAVAGE NÉE OSWALD 1931 — 2025

MABEL THERESA SAVAGE NÉE OSWALD

Mabel was born in Westmount Quebec, on August 15, 1931. In the 1940’s, she moved with her family to British Columbia and settled in Maple Ridge. Shortly thereafter, she began working at Eaton’s in downtown Vancouver. Mabel later met Peter, who was visiting BC from Australia, at an Eaton’s bowling event. The two eventually married in September of 1959, and with that began Mabel’s life as a devoted wife and mother. Her young family moved frequently, living for a year in Hawaii, Australia and various locations throughout Vancouver Island before establishing a forever home in Kamloops.

Mabel is survived by her loving children, Monica (Eric), Christopher (Gordana), Philomena (Harold), Evelyn (Thomas), Patricia (Jarett), and Lilian; her grandchildren Helen, Aaron, Tatjana, Darmir, Kaitlyn, Christine, Olivia (Christopher), Hermione and Paulina; her great-grandchild, Gideon; and her only remaining sibling, Jean (Martin). She is also survived by her sisters in-law, Ramona, Maureen and Mary.

She is predeceased by her husband Peter Savage; her son, Frank; her parents, Edgar and Lilian Oswald; and her siblings Connie (Harold), Edgar (Irene), Gertrude, James (Kay), June (Jack), Peter, Monica (Bill), Edward and Gerald.

Throughout her life, the kindness and generosity of the nuns who taught her had a lasting impact. Her Catholic faith and prayer were the cornerstones of her life until the very end. She never took her brown scapular off and there was a rosary in every purse and pocket. Mabel was known for her fervent prayers, and her intercession was requested by many. Now we honour her request for prayers for the repose of her soul.

Mabel was a dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, a member of the Catholic Woman’s League and of the Legion of Mary. She was also a member of the Kamloops Blazers Booster Club for over thirty years and a long-time member of the girl guides Trefoil Guild.

Mabel’s own needs and lifestyle were not elaborate: hot meals (preferably in a restaurant), HOT tea from a teapot, ice cream, good shoes, a clock in every room, prayer cards, and a working television. She often put others’ needs before her own and lovingly cared for her dependent sisters in their years of need. It was with the same love and by her example that her children cared for her. She passed away in hospice with her children always by her side until God called her home.

She loved and was loved by her family, her memory will live on in their hearts.
