Winona Evangeline (nee Hornett) Baird

December 27, 1925 – September 17, 2015

 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Winona at 89 years of age on Thursday September 17, 2015 at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, B.C as a result of a stroke. She passed peacefully with family and friends by her bedside. Winona, born in Magog, Quebec, to Charles and Maggie Hornett, was the youngest and last of her sibilings. She was predeceased by her sister, Eleanor, and her two brothers, Desmond and Earl. She is survived by her two sons, Desmond and Ronald, her six grandchildren, Kimberley, Lisa, Mark, Kathleen, Stephanie and James and her four great grandchildren. Simon, Kris, Beatrice and Ursula. Winona served in the Women’s Army Corp in the early 1950’s but quit to join her husband during his military deployment in Germany with the family. Winona worked for the Department of National Defence and subsequently with the Department of Supply and Services until her retirement in 1991. After retirement, she focused on spending time with her sons and her grandchildren.

 Winona will be very much missed by all her family and friends. May she rest in peace for eternity with our Lord.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 21, 2015 at the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, 285 Fortune Drive, Kamloops. A Memorial Service is planned to be held in Ottawa in the near future. In lieu of flowers, Winona had requested that donations be made to The Wales Home Foundation 506 Route 243, Richmond, Quebec, J0B 2H0 or The Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice Home 72 Whiteshield Crescent S, Kamloops, B.C, V2E 2S9

Joanne Gris 1955 — 2015

Joanne Gris

Joanne Gris passed away peacefully at home in Kamloops on September 12, 2015 with her husband at her side after an 11 year courageous battle with cancer.  Joanne was born on March 28, 1955 in Fernie, British Columbia.

Joanne was a bright student who graduated from Sparwood High School and attended both Capilano and Cariboo College where she obtained her Outdoor Recreation Degree. She also obtained her Social Work Degree while working full time and raising three children, receiving the Silver Medal for highest marks while doing so.

Joanne was a great leader who focused on her career with passion and integrity, retiring from the Ministry of Social Development after 33 years of Provincial Government Service.  She then went on to work for Community Living Services for several years before spending her remaining years mainly travelling to Phoenix, Mexico and Alaska with family. She most of all enjoyed her summers spending time at the family cabin on Kootenay lake in Nelson, BC.Read More & Leave Condolences »

Roy Hisashi Inouye 1931 — 2015

Roy Hisashi Inouye

ROY HISHASHI INOUYE of Kamloops, BC passed away on Tuesday September 8, 2015 at 83 years of age.

He is survived by his daughters Lori (Robert), Adele (Bill), and Teri (Denis), grandsons Brian and Alex, and sisters Margaret Lyons, Kazuko Shimizu, and Yoshiko Tanaka.  He is predeceased by his wife Betty, his parents, and his brothers Ray and Edison.

Roy was born in Mission City, BC, December 25, 1931, eldest son to Yoshinobu Inouye and Teru Tsuji.  During the 1942 evacuation of the Japanese Canadians from the BC Coast, he and his family moved to Oak Bluff and later Winnipeg, Manitoba and returned eight years later to Vancouver, BC.

He worked in the Lower Mainland before attending UBC where he met Betty Miyazaki, the love of his life. In 1957 he moved to Kamloops to own Ray’s TV Audio Ltd with his brother and in Kamloops Roy married Betty in 1959.  He joined Xerox in 1970 until he retired in 1989.

Roy was extremely active in numerous community organizations, both as a great support to his wife Betty in all the organizations she was involved in, and in his own role as a volunteer and board member of various organizations and committees.   His interest in serving the community began with his involvement with the Manitoba Buddhist Society. While at U.B.C. he joined the University Naval Training Division and there he continued his connection to the Buddhist Society which he sustained throughout his life. After moving to Kamloops he actively volunteered in numerous local, provincial and national committees, often serving on the Executive; those organizations included the Lions Club, the Navy League of Canada, the Kamloops and the National Japanese Canadian Associations (NAJC), the BC and Kamloops Folkfest Societies, the Kamloops Multicultural Society, the Kamloops Redress Society, the City of Kamloops Race Relations Committee, the Kamloops Sister City Committee, the Pan American Nikkei Association, the Canadian Ethnocultural Council, the Buddhist Churches of Canada, the BC Buddhist Temples Federation, and the Kamloops Buddhist Temple.

Over the decades his dedication to his community was well recognized and he received many awards.  Among those recognitions were the Government and Emperor of Japan Order of the Sacred Treasure Gold Rays with Rosette, the City of Kamloops Recognition of Achievement Award, the NAJC National Biennial Special Award, the Lions Club International District Lion of the Year, and the Buddhist Churches of Canada Commendation Award.

A Memorial Service celebrating his life will take place at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 18, 2015 at the Kamloops Buddhist Temple, 361 Poplar St., Kamloops, BC with Rev. Y Miyakawa officiating.  Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Kamloops Buddhist Temple.

Sylvia Lum 1939 — 2015

Sylvia Lum

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Sylvia Lum (nee Hansen). In the presence of her family, Sylvia passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice Home at the age of 76.

Sylvia was born near Young, Saskatchewan on March 3, 1939 and grew up in Prince George. After graduating from Nursing in Kamloops she worked at the Irving Clinic and Royal Inland Hospital.

Sylvia and Robert met during her training and they were married soon after. By 1970, they had 2 sons and she left nursing to raise the boys. While she kept Robert and the boys in line, Sylvia took on a variety of activities including seamstress, designing clothes for her family, bridal dress, and figure skating and ballet costumes, school volunteer, knitter, gardener.Read More & Leave Condolences »

It is with great sadness that we announced the sudden passing of Laura Lynn Brydon, Age 52, on August 31, 2015.
Born on August 15, 1963, Laura Brydon is survived by her husband Peter, her daughters Lynn and Julie, her sisters Trish, Cathy and Donna, her brother Andy, her parents Sylvia and Adam Hagel, and her four grandchildren Xavier, Kaius, Emma, and Katie.
Laura was beautiful both inside and out and cared so much about the loved ones who surrounded her in her too short life. She was a hard working and loving mother, a beloved wife, an amazing grandma, and a loving sister. Laura did everything in her power to enrich the lives of those around her. She was always there for her friends and family, and will forever be loved and missed by the many hearts and souls she touched.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 4th at 1:00 PM in the Kamloops Funeral Home, 285 Fortune Drive with reception to follow.
