Just an old submariner;
He was just an old submariner;
you see them now and then telling stories with his buddies of when they were younger men. Creative recollections of when they were strong and bold. Escapes that they recall but are best left and untold. Yet more than old submariners, they are brothers of the phin. Those whove earned their Dolphins are forever welcomed in. And when they finally cross the brow on their eternal leave all their brothers everywhere take time to mutely grieve. Its true the flag at city hall will not fly at half mast but lots of old submariners will be thinking of the past. And reciting with his buddies as they sing the final hymn he was just an old submariner but we shall remember him.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Peter over the past many months and am greatly saddened to know there will be no more smiling face and stories about his submariner days. To Beth, who was often a part of his stories, your loss will be acute and I so wish your memories with Peter will comfort you through this time. No doubt there will be a few giggles as you remember some of the stories but give thanks amd embrace the life you shared with Peter. Wishing you and family comfort and strength through this time. My condolences!

i sailed with Peter like this guy as a shipmate. Had a great sense of humor
I don’t now know how he picked up the nickname ‘Daisey’ but that is who he was on the submarines Grilse and Rainbow, and for all these decades later throughout the Submariners Association of Canada West. His laugh was infectious and his stories were endless (I even believed a few of them). He was a very good man and will be sorely missed when Old Submariners gather. Peter ‘Daisey’ Johnson, Submariner, He Shall Be Remembered.
I sailed with Peter in HMCS Rainbow from 1971 to 1975. Peter was an outstanding submariner in all respects. He had a great sense of humour which made him most popular with his shipmates. He was sorrowfully missed at the recent reunion of the Rainbow crew in Victoria.
Farewell, my friend!

My recollections of Peter were that of a true gentleman and chivalry personified. I had the privilege of knowing his family first-hand; having attended high-school with his lovely daughter, Sue-Helen – and later joining her as recruits in Army Basic Training.
Peter remained a good friend and father-figure during my eight years in the Canadian Army, and I thought often of the Johnson’s long after my exodus to the United States Marine Corps. My many trips at sea with the US Navy bared familiarity to Peter’s many tales of life underway; far from home and loved ones, discrete of your locality and status of personal safety.
His service to Canada was nothing less than noble, and he raised a delightful family despite hardships that faced him. Stalwart determination and grit were obvious personality traits of Peter.
Neither intended nor required of him, Peter taught me to be a better man. For that I am grateful.
Peter Johnson: I not only knew you, but I loved you, and will forever remember you.

I am really sorry to about Peter’s passing I worked with him in the Rangers and with him in Vernon Cadet Camp. Peter always had a smile and a great sense of humor, I never saw him loose his temper even when everything was going to hell in a handbasket. He was always very proud of his service, even if it was in the Navy, and one of the great few that served in our undersea fleet. We will miss you.
