IN LOVING MEMORY OF MARTIN

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John “Martin” Howitt. He passed peacefully, August 23, 2022, after receiving compassionate care from the staff of Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice. We are sad, but have been left with the gift of immeasurable gratitude and love for a man who lived his life well.

Martin was predeceased by his beautiful wife Jackie, not a day went by where he didn’t think of her. There is comfort in knowing they are now together again.

He leaves behind his daughter Karen (Dennis), step-son Robert (Brenda), step-daughter Sylvia (Brian), step-daughter-in-law Monica, numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great grandchildren. We are left with memories of time on his gold claim in Lillooet where we shared in his adventures. Surrounded by majestic mountains, large lava boulders and the flowing Fraser River, we would happily sit by an open fire, while stargazing under the night sky in perfect harmony.

Martin lived a life of adventure panning for gold and travelling with Jackie by his side. Together they travelled everywhere their wandering hearts desired to go. Leaving behind 57 photo albums of pictures to remember adventures by. Everyday was an adventure for Martin. Nothing deterred him from trying the impossible. If the road was washed out, he would put logs down to get to the other side. He would stand by and instruct Jackie as to how to drive the truck and camper over. Mom’s often heard expression was “Oh, Marty”!

Martin was a special man who lived without saying an unkind word about anyone. He was a gentleman in every way. He carefully chose his words to be said with respect, and if a situation was not to his liking he would simply distance himself.

He was a loyal friend spending his last years enjoying the friendship of Margaret. Together they watched movies, ate cookies, drank tea and on occasion had a glass of wine or two. She did not escape his adventuresome spirit where he took her on drives that could end up almost anywhere. Enjoying the chairlift at Sun Peaks and the storm that kept them stranded until the chairlift was running again, leaving the both soaked but still smiling!

He would never turn down an opportunity to gather with family and enjoyed each and every occasion. He will be missed and never forgotten. His was a smile we loved to see.
