JOHN MARTIN HOWITT 1928 — 2022

JOHN MARTIN HOWITT

IN LOVING MEMORY OF MARTIN

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John “Martin” Howitt. He passed peacefully, August 23, 2022, after receiving compassionate care from the staff of Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice. We are sad, but have been left with the gift of immeasurable gratitude and love for a man who lived his life well.

Martin was predeceased by his beautiful wife Jackie, not a day went by where he didn’t think of her. There is comfort in knowing they are now together again.

He leaves behind his daughter Karen (Dennis), step-son Robert (Brenda), step-daughter Sylvia (Brian), step-daughter-in-law Monica, numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great grandchildren. We are left with memories of time on his gold claim in Lillooet where we shared in his adventures. Surrounded by majestic mountains, large lava boulders and the flowing Fraser River, we would happily sit by an open fire, while stargazing under the night sky in perfect harmony.

Martin lived a life of adventure panning for gold and travelling with Jackie by his side. Together they travelled everywhere their wandering hearts desired to go. Leaving behind 57 photo albums of pictures to remember adventures by. Everyday was an adventure for Martin. Nothing deterred him from trying the impossible. If the road was washed out, he would put logs down to get to the other side. He would stand by and instruct Jackie as to how to drive the truck and camper over. Mom’s often heard expression was “Oh, Marty”!

Martin was a special man who lived without saying an unkind word about anyone. He was a gentleman in every way. He carefully chose his words to be said with respect, and if a situation was not to his liking he would simply distance himself.

He was a loyal friend spending his last years enjoying the friendship of Margaret. Together they watched movies, ate cookies, drank tea and on occasion had a glass of wine or two. She did not escape his adventuresome spirit where he took her on drives that could end up almost anywhere. Enjoying the chairlift at Sun Peaks and the storm that kept them stranded until the chairlift was running again, leaving the both soaked but still smiling!

He would never turn down an opportunity to gather with family and enjoyed each and every occasion. He will be missed and never forgotten. His was a smile we loved to see.

NICHOLAS KENTARO SHAO-QUAN ZHOU 2003 — 2022

NICHOLAS KENTARO SHAO-QUAN ZHOU

Beloved son of Rie Takahashi and James Zhou “Baba” and younger brother of Michael, passed away suddenly on November 2, 2022.  He was born on September 22, 2003 in Kamloops, B.C.

Nicholas was a smart, loving young man.  He loved hugs, and enjoyed interacting with his small group of close friends, some of whom are in other parts of Canada, so they played games, chatted and watched anime together via the internet.  He particularly enjoyed manga, constructing Lego, jigsaw puzzles, and playing the piano.  His physical pursuits included running, rock climbing and walking his fur buddy, Ruckus.

He was an ‘old soul’.  Compassionate and thoughtful.  He had a thirst for knowledge, and watched educational videos on YouTube, and via TED Talks.  He liked to help cook and bake, to read, and to watch short movies.  He enjoyed taking trips and he particularly enjoyed his RV trip to Whitehorse & Alaska, with his Baba.

He had recently started to learn to speak Japanese in anticipation of a visit to his family in Japan.  And to explore the possibility of getting his driver’s licence.

Nicholas – Mama, Baba, Michael, family and friends near and far will cherish the joy you’ve brought into our lives and will miss you and love you forever.

A viewing will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, November 12, 2022 in the Rosewood Room at Kamloops Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life for Nicholas will follow at 11:00am in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel at 285 Fortune Drive. Officiating is Sensei Naoki Hirano.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: https://gofundme.com/nicholas-zhou to support family and students who suffer with depression and social anxiety.

DAVID SIMMONITE 1936 — 2022

DAVID SIMMONITE

David was born on February 27, 1936 in Sheffield, England. As a little boy he loved steam trains and would spend countless hours at stations collecting engine numbers in his log book His love continued throughout his life, with building model train tracks in his home. He then started his love of gardening, helping his father at the family allotment in exchange for spending money to purchase his first bike.

David met and married his first love, Pamela, in 1958. She shared a love for cycling having, spending many trips through the French alps and entering cycling races in the English countryside. They both also enjoyed hill walking and joined Rotherham Ramblers.

David had an artistic side, singing and dancing in musicals and photography, leading to amateur cine movie making. After retiring as a company director and financial accountant, David emigrated with Pam to British Columbia, Canada in 1997, to join his daughter Kay (Darren) and grandchildren Emily (Grahame) and Liz (Sarah). He continued his love of gardening and joined the Point Grey Chrysanthemum Society, where David grew many prize winning blooms. David also enjoyed travelling with Pam, continued with his singing, but this time in church choirs as his faith was important to him. However, many of his favorite times was simply puttering in the garden with his grand kids when they were little.

The family is grateful that David is now finally at peace after several years of ill health.

There will be a service of Thanksgiving for His Life at 2:30pm, Saturday, November 5th at Kamloops United Church.

BONNIE HINES (NEE SMITH) 1938 — 2022

BONNIE HINES (NEE SMITH)

Bonnie wondered, as she stood in her rubber boots in the pig pen, how she ended up on a ranch.

The daughter of a father who was B.C. Police and then with the Game Dept., meant that she, her brother Dennis, and sister Sandy never stayed in any place for long. Yet this RIH nursing grad was now rooted: walking through manure, taking it all in, and loving her new life at Pinantan Lake. Her marriage to the lanky Garfield Hines would result in three boys (Brian, Dan and Darren) and an eventual move away from the ranch into Kamloops.

Her vocation and her nature were one. As a compassionate community nurse for many years, she was also a skilled mentor for younger nurses. Witty and warm, yet with a bright sadness and a persistent struggle with her hidden regrets, she dedicated her life to serving others. This continued into the years beyond her working life, as she volunteered at hospice and in pastoral care for her church.

Her favorite place was their simple cabin at Neskonlith Lake and enjoying time with her three grandchildren: Skye, Ali and Sarah. Bonnie’s faith was in the Spirit who guided her and her devotion was in studying the Bible for sustenance and grace. It gave her the quiet reassurance to gently release herself in the early morning hours into hands of mercy. As her body began to break down, she was ready for this freedom.

We will gather to celebrate her life at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at the Centennial Chapel Free Methodist Church at 975 Windbreak Street in Kamloops, BC. A tea will follow the service.
