Thomas Lazarus Loewen was born August 29, 1936 to J.J. and Helen Loewen (nee Harder) in Coledale, AB, as a triplet to two sisters, he was the 9th born of 18 children. His mother gave birth to 4 sets of twins and 1 set of triplets and 7 singles. Tom spent his early years in Coledale, AB, on the family farm, but the mountains of BC were loudly calling.
He met his late wife, Mary in bible school in BC and married August 2, 1958 (65 years!). Three boys were the fruits of their labour.
Over the years, the Loewen family lived all over BC from the beautiful Nicola Valley at Teddy Whiteford Ranch to the cold north and the wild wilderness of the Kootenays. The family travelled by truck to Mexico as missionaries and had a wonderful time learning a new culture and language.
Tom and Mary were missionaries to their core, if they weren’t in Mexico or Africa, they were leading people in churches, streets, and their home. Up until Tom’s final days, 1 year and 4 months after Mary went to be with Jesus, Tom declared his faith to anyone who could hear. From an early age he dedicated his life to honour and follow God. He was so humbled by the Lord and everything He had brought him through that if you met you Tom, you also heard about Jesus.
Tom is meeting in heaven many friends and relatives, but most notably his beautiful wife, Mary, and eldest son Don (Jody) of Merritt, BC. Tom is survived by his sons Jon (Christine) of Kamloops, BC, and Gordon (Leandra) of Grande Prairie, AB. And probably the most impressive legacy Tom (and Mary) could ever leave, is the Loewen legacy of 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren (and counting!).
Tom will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, September 5th at 2:30pm at Motion Church, 1099 Fraser St. in Kamloops, BC.
In lieu of flowers, find a stranger, buy ‘em coffee, and tell them about Jesus
