“CATHY” CORNELIA CATRINA MARIA INSKIP (nee VINK)

March 2, 1954 – August 20, 2022

With broken hearts, we are sad to announce that Cathy Inskip of Kamloops, B.C. passed away at the age of 68, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was a loving mother to her children, Carrie, Ken, (Brittney) and Micheal Inskip, all of Kamloops, B.C. She was a proud grandma to her grandchildren Reid & Evan Inskip (Ken) and Quinn Kalverla (Carrie) and loved them with all her heart. She will be sadly missed by her siblings, Mary Anne Cook (Howard), Brenda Herbert (Rod), Brian Vink (Lianne), sister-in-law Helen Vink (Gary Vanniere), and brother-in-law, John Eve (Shauna) all of Ontario. Also her sister-in-law Kathy Hill of Prince George, B.C., and brothers-in-law, Bruce Inskip (Gerry) & Allan Inskip (Dodi) of Salmon Arm, B.C. Fondly remembered by aunts & an uncle, many nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews & cousins on both sides of the family from B.C., Ontario & Holland. Cathy was predeceased by her husband Gordon, her parents, Cor & Betty Vink, her sister, Margaret Eve, brother Tom Vink, nephew Gregory Cook & brother-in-law Jim Hill. We should also mention, she was predeceased by her beloved and faithful little dog, Bella, who was her dearest companion and protector for many years. Cathy was born on March 2, 1954 in St. Marys, ON and grew up on a dairy farm near Stratford, ON. She loved helping with the chores – milking the cows and working on her tan during the summer months helping drive the tractor and machines or hefting the endless hay bales onto the wagon. If we couldn’t find Cathy, we found her playing with her favourite cats and kittens. Cathy was never afraid of a challenge and in 1973, she put her name in to run for Perth County Dairy Princess and won. The following year, she ran for Ontario Dairy Princess, and was one of the four runners up. She was an avid 4-H member & leader and a member of the Perth County Junior Farmers. In 1974, Cathy moved out, on her own, to Prince George, B.C. to work for her Uncle Ben as his personal assistant at his construction company. Cathy met her husband Gordon at an evening of square-dancing and they travelled back to St. Marys, ON to get married on July 23, 1977. They were married for almost 31 years. They lived and raised their family at 209 Royal Avenue, Kamloops. Cathy loved this one acre property on the Thompson River and took great pride looking after her gardens and tending to her fruit trees. She was so proud to share a bountiful crop of cherries and plums and made countless jars of jam! In the winter, her Christmas display of lighted figures on the front lawn grew bigger and bigger every year. Cathy’s door was always open and friends and family alike knew they were always welcome and that there would be a piece of freshly baked pie or cake and a cup of tea, a home cooked meal, or their favourite beverage would always be available. In 2019, she finally sold her property and moved to the other side of the river which was a little less work for her. Cathy worked at Weyerhaeuser for many years and then moved on to be a delivery driver for DHL and she loved working part time for the KXA – organizing the horse races & winter fairs. Cathy was involved with the Kamloops Girl Guides for 18 years and was proud to be Grey Owl and Commissioner and help to guide many young girls who still remember her fondly. She was always creative in thinking of different ways to make the activities and trips a fun experience for leaders and girl guides alike. She was a member of the Overlander Women’s Institute for over 40 years and was president for the last several years. Again, she was always thinking of ways to keep her “ladies” active and productive raising money with craft and bake sales and other similar projects. She was also a member of the Kamloops C.W.L for many years and was involved there as well with numerous activities including the Christmas bazaars & making baptismal quilts for all the babies baptized at O.L.P.H. Cathy loved to travel and in her later years, travelled to visit family in Holland and went on tours to Greece, Italy, Australia and Peru with family and friends. Cathy was an avid seamstress, and she loved sewing clothes for her children and nieces too. A few still fondly talk about a certain favourite outfit that Cathy had sewed for them. Later on, she started a new hobby – quilting – and this became her new favourite thing to do. She created many beautiful quilts and even had an online presence on Etsy called Grandma’s Quilts Studio and she sold several quilts to places as far as Ontario, Quebec, the U.S. and Australia. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and knitting and created many beautiful afghans for her family. In May, 2022, when she received the devastating news, that the cancer had progressed and her days were numbered, she took on the dauntless task of creating 21 beautiful quilts for her family which she proudly presented as legacy quilts. The last 8 weeks of her life was a steady stream of family from Ontario and B.C. who wanted one last game of cards with her. Cathy was a loyal, strong, passionate, independent, and fearless woman and life became challenging for her when she realized she could no longer be in charge. It was not easy for her. We take comfort in knowing that she is at peace now. Donations can be made to a Women’s Institute project that is near and dear to Cathy’s heart – the B.C.W.I. Forensic Nursing Bursary. MARY ELLEN CURNOW (MCELROY) 1930 — 2022

MARY ELLEN CURNOW (MCELROY)

Born January 24, 1930 in new Westminster as the only child to David Lawrence McElroy and Georgina McElroy (Kent.) As an infant they moved to Highland Valley to ranch where she grew into a true pioneer learning to do everything at a young age. In 1942 they acquired the Highland Valley lodge with her family guiding guests through the area with her string of horses often caught from the wild herds, she knew the highland valley and Pimainus plateau like the back of her hand.

Predeceased by her husband Ron Curnow. They had acquired the Curnow ranch from his aunt where they made their home and ran a successful business of raising quality cattle, horses, hay, and sweet corn. She was a respected horse breeder and known for her quality cattle. Running cattle on the Pimainus plateau where she would spend much of her life riding, advocating, and spending countless hours at the lakes with her friends. She was happiest out in the hills on a horse. When ever she could she would go team penning, barrel racing, or to gymkhanas.

Having no kids of her own she enjoyed visits from nieces and nephews and friends where she could tell her stories and always getting a laugh. She is predeceased by her sister-in-law Shirley Curnow and survived by her brother-in-law and sisters-in-law; Les (Bridgette) Curnow, Muriel Dennison, Joyce Walkem and many generations of nieces and nephews. Mary passed away peacefully August 2, 2022 at the age of 92. She is beloved by many and will be fondly remembered for her generosity, sense of humor, laughter, stories, and teachings. A celebration of life will be held at the Curnow Ranch August 27, 2022 at 1pm at the Curnow Ranch 10300 Merritt spences bridge hwy.

ELSIE GEORGINA VERA PASSMORE

Elsie Passmore, 88 of Kamloops, BC, passed away on August 9, 2022 at home surrounded with love and family.

Elsie was born on March 3, 1934 to
Alex and Hilda Antypovich in
Witchekan, Saskatchewan.

She brought much joy and laughter
into this world.

Elsie married Charles Passmore and they had 4 children: Charles, James, Vera and Darrell. Family came first. A value she instilled in all these around her. The hole left by her absence is impossible to fill. Our mother was one of the strongest, kindest, bravest and sweetest women to walk this earth
and our family was blessed to have her as head of the family.
She was loved by many people.

Elsie was predeceased by her father Alex, mother Hilda and brother Victor. She is survived by her four children, nineteen grand children, twenty-three great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, brothers Ed and Walter, sister Doris, and numerous nieces and nephews.

All will miss this kind, witty and supportive sweet lady.

Viewing will be between 9:00am-10:00am.
Funeral Service will be held, Saturday, August 20th, 2022 at 10:00am in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel.

SYLVIA ROSE (NEE HARPER) FERGUSON

On August 9, 2022, our beloved Mother passed away at the wonderful age of 106 years old. She loved and was loved by her family. We will miss her so much.

Predeceased by her husband Douglas of 68 years. Sylvia is survived by children Joan (John) and Alan (Dian), grandchildren Brad and Wendy, and many generations of extended family.

Sylvia’s family wish to thank Dr. Jason O’Connell and the Hamlets Westsyde for their friendship and excellent care over the years. A private graveside will be held at a later date.

LAURA JEAN GRAHAM 1954 — 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of Laura Jean Graham announces her passing on July 26th, 2022 in Kamloops, BC at the age of 67.  Laura was born in Vancouver on November 3rd, 1954.

She is survived by her son Graham Hendry of Vancouver; her siblings Mike (Sharon) Graham of Coquitlam and Nancy (Michael) Sharkey of Gibsons; her nephews Russell and Rhys Sharkey; stepchildren Paul (Lisa) Rodd [their daughter, Olivia], Courtney (Benjamin) Rodd, and Ben Rodd; and countless family friends, ladies’ golf partners, and PEO sisters. Laura was predeceased by her parents Shirley (2012) and Gordon Graham (2015), and her second husband Gordon Rodd (2021).

Laura was a strong-willed, passionate, and creative soul. At a young age, she spent countless hours at the rink honing her figure skating skills. Early mornings, with a chocolate bar in hand, this is where Laura practiced and started to perfect her work ethic, her driven nature, and her determined attitude.

Spending most of her formative years growing up in Vancouver, Edmonton and Chilliwack, Laura set out for the University of Victoria, after a trip to the States helped her choose between pursuing a career in fashion or education. Once earning her undergraduate degree in Honours English, she spent the next 6 months backpacking in Europe with some friends.  Upon returning home, Laura taught a few years in Hope, B.C. before moving to Kamloops where she met her first husband, Wayne Hendry, and she spent the remainder of her career, teaching anything from Textiles, Physical Education to English Literature- her passion.  Upon entry into administration, Laura could not leave the classroom behind and taught small classes of English Literature at NorKam (as a vice principal) and Valleyview (as principal) so the programs could get up off the ground; never skipping an opportunity to dress up as Queen Elizabeth, she would encourage the students to don traditional garments and have an Elizabethan feast.  Whether it was the countless hours she spent sewing costumes for school productions, helping sponsor school sports teams, or coaching and encouraging her son’s various sporting endeavours, Laura was always keen to lend a helping hand. She was also extremely proud of coming from a family of educators and cherished that her son followed in the family footsteps.

The family cabin at Loon Lake- built by Laura’s grandparents- offered up a great place for respite between each school year. It was a place that family and friends cherish many memories of Laura: during the day sun tanning and fishing on the pontoon boat, in the evenings around the campfire, and at any point around the table playing a rousing game of cards.  Laura’s determined nature prompted the rebuild efforts after the original cabin was lost to the wildfires in 2017.

Retirement brought on several new opportunities for Laura.  She found love again with her second husband, Gord- whom she married in the summer of 2011- and created a new home in Sun Rivers in 2015. Laura continued to give back in terms of her involvement in the local PEO chapter, as well as helped organize Ladies’ golf nights at Big Horn Golf & Country Club.  Retirement also offered up the opportunity to travel more, whether it be to Hawaii, Mexico, or Largo, Florida to escape the Thompson Okanagan winters. She was able to devote more time to family, support her aging parents and cheer on the younger generation- earning her nickname “Auntie Camera” – as an enthusiastic photographer of events, gatherings and family milestones.
