Vern Gerald Monsen of Kamloops passed away suddenly on Thursday October 15^th 2020 at 75 years of age. Survived by his loving wife Bonnie, daughters Sherry Jones, Corinna Monsen, and son Kevin (Amber) Monsen. Grandsons Jason (Alyssa) Jones and Tyler (Casey) Jones. Grandaughters  Alysia and Sophie Monsen. Vern was also survived by two brothers and five sisters.  He was predeceased by daughter Candace. He drove for BC Transit for 25 years in Chilliwack until he retired in Kamloops. Vern will be laid to rest beside his daughter Candace in Sorrento BC.

It is with great sadness that the family of Margaret Day announces her passing on October 12, 2020. Margaret is survived by her loving husband John, son Andy (Cindy), daughter Debbie, mother Emily, sister Fay (Chuck) and 4 grandchildren Zack, Johnathan, Celina and Ethan. Margaret also leaves behind many good friends that she loved and cherished. Margaret was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Family happiness was her main purpose and it brought her great joy being surrounded by her family. She was a talented gardener, cook and seamstress. Margaret was always there for anyone who needed her. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the nurses and doctors at Royal Inland Hospital for the great care they provided to her in her last days. July 5, 1956 – September 22, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Stanley Kiyoshi Yoshida announce his sudden passing on September 22, 2020. 

He will be deeply missed by his mother Hatsue and brothers: Don of Virginia, niece Shena and nephew-in-law Ryan of Brooklyn, NY. Ken of Kamloops. Gary (Suzanne), niece Lyric and nephew Rohan of Whistler, BC.  

Surviving Stan is his Uncle Jenji (Joanne) of Brentwood Bay, BC. Cousins Sandi and Jason of Victoria, BC  and Laura of Portland, OR. Aunt Anna (Barry) of Kamloops, Uncle Tetsuo of Calgary, AB and Uncle Hidewo  (Setsuko) of Winnipeg, MB and cousins Blair, Kent and Erin. Cousins of Vancouver include Rick (Diane), Abe (Pamela), Evelyn and Linda (Mike) of Kamloops BC. 

Stan was predeceased by Brother Patrick 1980, Father Yoshio 2011, Uncle Fiko 2019, Aunt Setsuko 2009 (Yataro 2010), Aunt Jean 2004, Aunt Midori 2005, Uncle Suyeki 2017 (Lorna 2018) and Aunt Haruka 1998 (Mitsuo 1996). 

Stan was a talented sound engineer who made his reputation in the music industry in the 1970s starting with a Vancouver-based band named Weather. He subsequently toured with many successful artists including Supertramp, the Pointer Sisters, U2 and The Rolling Stones. His engineering work earned him platinum and gold records. While living in Vancouver, Stan worked with production company Kelly Deyong Sound and was the in-house sound engineer at venues including The Commodore Ballroom and Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Later on, Stan’s extensive knowledge and calm demeanor landed him a role as the Technical Director at Vancouver’s Columbia Academy of Recording Arts.

In addition to music, Stan’s other passion was photography. He took many images of the bands he worked as well as of his own family. In 2015, he left Vancouver and returned to Kamloops, where he became the dedicated caregiver of his mother, Hatsue. He loved reaching out to his nieces and nephew and would never miss a birthday or holiday, sending cards along with news to brighten the day. 

We are deeply saddened by our loss.

The Funeral for Stanley is scheduled for Sunday, October 18th at 11:00am at Kamloops Funeral Home, 285 Fortune Drive, Kamloops BC. For attendance please RVSP with Kamloops Funeral Home (250) 554-2577.

William “Bill” Sydney Davies, 76, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2020 in Kamloops, BC after a short battle with cancer.  Bill was born on December 17, 1943 to Joseph and Gertrude Davies in Toronto, Ontario, the youngest of two children.

Bill worked as a carpenter for his entire career.  Apart from being a carpenter, he was a member of the Thompson Valley Lapidary Club and during his retirement Bill thoroughly enjoyed life spending time on anything which involved working with his hands including wood carving, making jewelry, leatherwork, making beer and wine, sewing handbags for all of his favorite people as well as working in his garden and walking his dog Jake. 

Bill is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia; sister, Mary (Bob) Poulin; daughter, Shelly Davies (Greg); step-son, Brad (Danielle) Finnen; grandchildren, Neil Wiens, Sherilyn (Pat) Lamontagne, TJ Finnen, Vince Finnen, Sarah Davies, Elizabeth Davies; great-granddaughter, Charlie-Mae Wiens.  Bill was preceded in death by his son Erroll Davies.  

In memory of Bill a bench will be placed on his favorite dog walk at Aviation Way in Kamloops, BC.  To all of  his dog walking friends, have a sit, enjoy the view and remember Bill in fondness.

Rest in peace Bill, Dad, Grandpa, Great-grandpa… you will be missed.

Robert Andrew McClean Hetherington, 83, chose to suddenly leave this earth early in the morning of Thursday, September 24, 2020. Predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Iris Louise Hetherington (nee Taylor), he is survived by his daughters Barbara Diane Hetherington (Don McConnell) of Kamloops, BC and Joanne Leslie Hetherington of Vancouver, BC as well as his brothers Gary (Deidre) and Tom (Ingrid), both of Vancouver, BC and his brother Brian (Alma) of Maple Ridge, BC, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Born in New Westminster on April 5, 1937 to Robert and Pauline Hetherington (nee Krawchuk), Rob often reminisced about his times wreaking havoc on the banks of Burnett Creek and his later experiences as an RCN(R) cadet.
After marrying the love of his life Iris, on June 28, 1957 in New Westminster and lured by the landscape, hunting, fly fishing and a job at Weyerhaeuser, Rob left his job at Lenkurt Electric and moved the family to Kamloops in 1963.
In the 1970’s Rob decided to make a change and became one of the first graduates of the Recreation program at Cariboo College (now TRU). His final presentation in this program was notable for being instrumental in helping persuade City Council to save a struggling “zoo” which is now known as the BC Wildlife Park. Serving on the Board of Directors of the Park for many years, Rob was very proud of his part in its ongoing success and his amazing friendship with the resident Cougar, Camper.
Rob then accepted the position as Facilities Manager for Parks & Recreation in Kamloops and oversaw the operations of all the City’s Arenas. He was always proud of his achievements with the City including increasing support and ice time for the Figure Skating Club and fitting Memorial Arena with a dry floor to lure bigger concert acts to town. He was also one of the driving forces behind the attempted creation of the Management Association at the City of Kamloops. After early retirement in the mid 1980’s, he then turned his energy towards his other passion. As a long-time member of Kamloops Target Sports Association, Rob was tireless in advocating to uphold the right to responsible firearms ownership. As an active advocate & long-time board member of Kamloops Target Sports Association, he and a group of other members began a small fundraising show to raise money to purchase land for a range. He was always very proud of his part in the establishment of this “little gun and antique show” which has now grown to be one of the largest of its kind in Western Canada. Also known as “Rusty Hinges”, Rob was a proud member of SASS, the Single Action Shooting Society (Home of Cowboy Action Shooting) which he loved for the role playing, sense of history, and attending various events in his character for the “Love of the Game”. If you’ve been to the gun show and heard stories from the man in the antique British Army officer’s uniform, well, you’ve met Rob. He was an accomplished raconteur and had a story for any occasion.
Throughout his life, his sense of fairness and doing the right thing was what led him to the decisions he made and the actions he took, sometimes regardless of personal cost. He was a firm believer in Women’s, Worker’s and First Nations’ Rights. Rob’s love of Hunting, Salmon and Fly Fishing also drove his belief in the need to protect our natural environment.
Rob would often say that he was born in the “Right Country – Wrong Time” and he may have been right for many reasons.
After his Lovely Lady Iris passed, last year, Rob wasn’t the same. He wanted to be with her together forever and now he is. Barbara and Joanne would like to thank the Staff at Royal Inland Hospital on 7 North for their care and company during his stay earlier this year and the Kamloops Funeral Home for their assistance. We would also like to thank Loyd Anderson for his ongoing help, support and friendship.
A Celebration of Life will be arranged and announced at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC would be appreciated.
